As the amount of time we spend inside our homes increases with the winter weather, we will have a tendency to observe things we normally overlook. For example dull wooden flooring, becomes apparent as we take extra minutes to clean up the wet mess that has been drug in on shoes. As we wipe away at a parquet floor that looks lacklustre the wheels in our heads begin to spin. Time to rejuvenate them, we think. But then comes the deluge of other priorities, and the long list of what will be required. After taking a deep breath, and recognizing this can be completed in due time make some decisions,

Take note, if the floors have been waxed and sealed, it might be time to repeat the process after sanding them down. You can either rent a sander to do the refurb yourself, or hire a pro to get the job done. But once this has occurred, what can you do to keep those floors looking great longer? Actually, some floor finisher/polish have sunscreen in them to protect the wood from sun damage. Otherwise, you are left with the old fashioned approach of opening curtains when the space is in use, and closing them when it is not. If I were you, I would definitely inquire about the sunscreen. It can lengthen the time span between having to redo the floors, and when they start to look bland again.

For those of you who read the articles on this site with even some regularity, it is apparent how compulsive I am about maintaining my wooden floors. It might come across as somewhat fanatical at times, but since I was a small child I have wanted pristine wood floors throughout a house. This was prompted by the floors in my aunt’s house, they were some of the most gorgeous floors I have ever seen, and she too went to some extreme lengths to keep them spectacular.

In fact, I remember quite clearly wearing hard heeled mary jane styled shoes to her house one Easter and breaking into a spontaneous tap routine. I imagine the sugar from all that Easter candy was partly to blame, but I was quickly corrected. That may have been the last time I ever pretended to know how to tap dance, and the moment when my respect for wood floors set in.

Still, when I first saw a tip in a popular American magazine to place tube socks over the legs of furniture to protect the floors, I even scoffed at the idea. The picture that coincided with the recommendation looked preposterous, as did the expression on my face I assume. Anyway, I read further and saw that they meant for you to do this only when rearranging furniture. Thus, on a second look this makes a great deal of sense, and thought it no longer to be completely crazed.

Thought you might like to have the idea shared, if not the picture, I’m leaving that up to your imaginations.

Having seen this done by my grandmother when I was little, I have taken to hanging holiday cookie cutters as decorations this year. In grannies house the already antique cutters looked beautiful dangling from the Christmas tree, and wreath over the mantle. Whether they were actually emanating the fragrance of sugar cookies remains a mystery, but her entire house smelled deliciously sweet all December long.

To bring back this ornament idea, my daughters and I will be stringing bell, star, snowman and star shaped cookie cutters with satin ribbons in copper, and silver. We will be making the copycat wreath from scratch, and then will match things up by wrapping coordinating ribbons around the wreath with identical mini cutters woven in. By the time this memory surfaced, I had already planned out the baked goods that I would be making for the holiday season, and sugar cookies were not on the list. However, I am reconsidering this, and imagine that I will simply not be able to resist baking at least a baker’s dozen or so just to make things complete.

Before you get a remodel underway on your kitchen, think long and hard about which flooring you will install. This can be an excellent spot to get your home greening into full swing. In fact it has been said that flooring in general is one of the strongest areas to jump on the greening bandwagon. Luckily a lot of the green flooring options work really well in kitchens, so put them at the top of your most wanted list.

For starters, think bamboo, cork, and brace yourself, linoleum. Bamboo is a rapidly renewable material (it is not really a wood as you might have formerly thought it is a grass). Not to mention it looks amazing. Cork is simply the bark of a tree, and grows back in a handful of years, unlike the extensive time it takes to regrow actual trees. It is critical that you get it sealed properly so that it does not absorb moisture and can be cleaned. Finally, linoleum is made of bunch of curious materials, but is environmentally sound. They all present excellent options, but each one will have pros and cons like any other flooring so find out which is the one for you with further research in this area.

Last month I noted that my fridge freezer did not appear to be getting as cold as it once did. This prompted me to do some research on freezer thermostats and fridge freezer repairs together with other related topics. Along the way, I got slightly side tracked by articles on how much food we waste per year, TONS, and how by freezing more foods we single handedly can keep quite an impressive amount of food from the bins.

Obviously, waste is a huge topic in these cash strapped times, and should be at all times. Next thing I knew the morning program I always watch was doing a piece on how consumers can do a lot more to lengthen the life span of their foods, and thus cut down on throwing out perfectly good food. Turns out we confuse use by dates with best when used by dates. And if we pay more attention, and get those foods that still have some life left in them to the freezer, we gain even more time to consume them.

I also took away from the information the insight that by purchasing more already frozen foods, specifically vegetables and fruit, I will have these healthy items available when I need them, but will not have to worry about using them quickly. This means I not only do my part to cut back on food waste, but I throw away less money too. All of this has spurred me to confirm that my freezer is functioning at its optimum level, so I can fill it up and know I am acting as a more sensible homemaker on several different levels.

I have a dear friend who is getting ready to install wood floors in her home. She has her own blog, and has begun a bit of an open forum regarding the whole process of choosing the right wood flooring. Everyone who has responded, including myself, has acknowledged the outright benefits of wood floors, such as the incomparable beauty, the fact that they add value to your home, that they are hypoallergenic, and can last for more than a lifetime.

With all of that said, there has been not only quite a few responses to her poll, but strong ones. I am finding that there are different camps involving those who support solid wood, milled exotics, engineered, and laminates. As I am a solid wood strip proponent, and have been for a while, I admittedly did not know about how much some of the others have to offer.

To be frank, when I spoke to this friend on a one on one basis I staunchly argued for real wood. I sited how rich it is in appearance, it holds heat, and has the longest lifespan of any flooring I would consider, amongst several other things. I then took a glance at some of the first few responses she had received online, and felt the need to put in my two cents. Really, to me it seemed like the obvious choice, knowing she plans to remain in the home for the rest of her life, and it is within her budget.

Then, as the votes continued to roll in, along with first-hand experience descriptions, I began to see that it might not be as cut and dry for any of the camps involved. I can now acknowledge that many factors should be considered prior to such a decision, aside from the obvious issue of cost.

As the seasons change, many of us prepare to do some serious revamping of the organisation of our homes. For we need to switch our so many things to ensure the comfort and care of our families during the cold months ahead. But here is one idea that will benefit you all year round, and for several years to come. Plus, the fact that it is so darn simple, but makes such a substantial change in decluttering, you will be pleased as punch.

Commit yourselves to keeping your remotes in one container. Something that is large enough to house them into one spot works best. One of the best things about this is that you probably already own the very thing that would be perfectly suited for this. Think of big mouth vases, or glass bowls. Place whatever your container of choice happens to be in a convenient spot and say goodbye to those annoying searches, and petty arguments of who had it last, and who should find it.

This will of course work beautifully throughout the house, so there is no need to limit it to the living room. Replicate this container approach in the game room, bedrooms, and any other place where those remotes lurk under cushions, comforters, toys, books, rugs and pillows. Once you have won this battle you can get back to airing out linen closets, and bringing out heavier duvets.

At the outset of our remodel of our bathroom last year, I was sure I had a very clear vision of what I wanted the finished room to look like. I believed that a vague recollection of a bathroom sink I had seen on a trip to Spain would be clear as day once I located a similar one amongst the thousands available. And that by carrying around a small sample of the wood used to make the bathroom cabinets, along with a magazine photo of a tile pattern I would be able to quickly and easily replicate the overall vision I had taken in at a spa. Yes, I thought I had it totally under control, and I was totally wrong.

For starters, that piece of wood I was lugging about turned out to be big enough to add substantial weight to my handbag, but not large enough to provide an accurate image of what we had chosen. I mean sure it was apparent that it was a light wood, but the additional colours found in the grain design were missing. So, I was left trying to remember how dark the darkest section was and how light the lightest portion was in the cabinets. But, there was nothing to be done but go with my best guess because work had begun and in order to stay on schedule the sink, bathtub, and toilet had to be ordered immediately. There simply was no time to request another section of the wood.

Things did not go much better when it came to reconfiguring the wall tiles either. Whether it be due to the fact that I am creeping up there in age, or just the pressure of the whole success of our bathroom makeover resting on my shoulders I pretty much blanked on exactly what the tiles in that bathroom in Barcelona had looked like. I have got to tell you, once in the presence of a hundred tile variations those things can blend into a big swirling blur. Now, while I am not proud of my blundering ways during this project, I can share with you how to avoid such complications.

When requesting sample sections of anything do act shy. Get a size of the material that shows every aspect of it well. And if you are planning to use a space you encounter in your travels as an inspirations days, weeks, or even years later, be sure to take a picture for goodness sake. Because the mind, and memory can play tricks on you and those bathroom tiles are not easily removed if you pick some that are not the right ones.

There are a few ways to assist your laundry to come out of the drier crisper and less rumpled. The one that I have found to work the best is to add a dissolved mixture of two tablespoons of cornstarch and one cup cold water to a rinse cycle. I simply can’t stand spending unnecessary time running the iron back and forth over cotton shirts, or bed and table linens.

Another helpful hint is to take your laundry out of the dryer prior to it being completely dry, and ironing it then and there. Because they are damp, you can skip using the spray option on the iron, and it will take you less time to complete the work. However, remember to test that the items are just damp, and no longer wet, or this will not be of use.

And also remember that doing these little crafty things does not make you any less of a super homemaker, it just upgrades you to a super smart home maker. Smart and effective is the best of everything.

A contract that is made between a landlord and their tenant is known as a tenancy. Through a tenancy, permission is granted for the tenant to live on the property if certain conditions are met. Rent must be paid on time to the landlord, as well as the tenant observing certain rules. These legally binding agreements usually come in a written format but in some cases may simply be a verbal arrangement. This could of course lead to some problems down the road since the agreement is not set in stone through a legal document. When landlords and tenants enter into tenancies, there are different kinds they could use.

A regulated tenancy is a tenancy agreement that was initiated prior to 15 January 1989. In order for the tenancy to qualify as such, the tenant cannot reside in the same dwelling as the landlord. Additionally, the tenant must not benefit from any services being offered by the landlord. Some landlords provide cleaning services. Your agreement could be considered a regulated tenancy if you have declined to take advantage of these services. Tenants are provided with more rights when entering into a regulated tenancy in comparison to other sorts of tenancies. For one, there is greater protection against eviction. The establishment of a fair cost of rent is another benefit afforded from a regulated tenancy.

A second type of tenancy is an assured shorthold tenancy (AST). Again, certain criterion must be met in order for a tenancy to be classified as such. The property being rented must be privately owned. The tenancy commencement date must be 15 January 1989 or thereafter. Like a regulated tenancy, the landlord must not live anywhere on the property. As a general rule, all newly drawn up tenancies will usually fall under this category.

A third type of tenancy is simply known as an assured tenancy. An assured tenancy is quite similar to an AST. However, tenants are provided with more rights under an assured tenancy. In order for a tenancy to qualify as an assured tenancy, the rent amount must be within a certain range. For instance, any rent that exceeds £100,000 or is beneath £250 would qualify as an assured tenancy. In the city of London, the rent must fall below £1000 to qualify as an assured tenancy.
