The next time your spouse or partner tells you that shopping and home decorating is not for them, you might pull out the Dicken’s card. The much loved, highly acclaimed author Charles Dickens it turns out had many an interest beyond penning books. Chances are your other half has some connection to a Dicken’s novel or a film that was based upon his clever, timeless works.

The fact that he was an eloquent wordsmith, and the creator of such rough and tumble characters will likely mean that your feller is in awe of this master. Even if he is not aware of the relationship between him and the very movie he forces you to watch each and every Christmas Eve, it will take but a second to educate him. Then Dickens will become the perfect rationale that you have been looking for to prove you don’t have to be a woman to enjoy the experience of choosing chairs, tables, or even wall colours.

I am uncertain as to whether or not many people knew of Charles Dickens lifelong passion for homemaking, but it has been brought to the forefront recently by an author, Hilary Macaskill. From what I gather, she was writing a book on the places that Dickens had lived in and came across information more than supporting the claim that he was enthralled with interior design.

She found evidence in some of his own writings that he was extremely active in the decorating of the homes he shared with his wife Catherine. For he shared his vision for the design of rooms down to the last detail such as the colour of the moulding around the wallpaper with those around him. In addition, even prior to his union he wrote of his household purchases with specificity.

In fact, his decorative input was not limited to his own homes, he shared it at different times throughout the course of his life. Ms. Macaskill references the amount of involvement he had with the furnishing and décor placed in the fallen women’s home he set up with a female philanthropist. Then, he proceeded to offer his services to the philanthropist herself.

In conclusion, it is abundantly clear that he did not merely dabble in decorating, he was outspoken on the topic. Whether it was the choice in curtains, or in colours he had input. His strong opinions as to how things should be arranged were not kept to himself. Most importantly, this make icon enjoyed his role as decorator. Thus, your Charlie, James or Larry might also if they were willing to give it a chance.

Buying any kind of home or property is usually a very stressful job for many people. However, with the right information on where to get the right house might be a good step towards purchasing a good home. This article aims to solve your dilemma in buying a home in the UK by giving you a sample guide of some of the aspects you really need to consider whenever you want to buy property.

You might need a loan in order to purchase the home in the first place. There are many different properties for sale in the UK and each of them is priced very differently. Before you can even start to search for the house you want to buy, it is important to keep in mind that you would need financing for this home? Do you have the amount? These are some of the questions a property sale company might ask you. It is important to ensure that the loan you are Seeking does not strain your salary or other outgoings. Whatever the amount of loaned cash you go for; it should not interrupt with your normal life now and in the days to come.

After you have got the financing, the next thing is to start the search. Considering that there are many properties for sale in the UK and other areas, a property agent might be of help to you. On the other hand, there are certain aspects that you have to keep in mind whenever you are conducting this search. It is important to know the capacity of the home you need. If you need a garden or car facility, this should also be specified. Probably you might need to buy property in a serene environment away from noises of traffic. If you have school going kids, you would want your home to be near such places. At times you may want to stay near your place of work as well. The type of property you need is another of the biggest elements in this. You have to consider whether you need an older or new house. After you figure out the kind of requirements you need, you can now get an agent to search the current properties for sale.

It is always important to have the cash ready. It would not take a long time before you get the ideal home. When you land the desired home, you should be able to pay for it at a go. This is because there are many people searching for these properties. If at all you had applied for mortgage, make sure the required finances are availed when you want to pay up for the home. If you are a first time buyer you will be at a better place because most of the people selling properties require such persons. Another aspect that many people overlook when they buy property anywhere in the world is a solicitor. This is the person who deals with the legal processes of transferring property ownership. Make sure that you meet all the legal requirements before you get into that new home. You can then enjoy your stay.

When remodelling a room, or an entire house many people have an interest in laying some cool flooring. Sure, there are those who prefer to stick to the tried and tested old standbys, for it is definite that they will function well, last a certain time, and look a way that they are very familiar with. And it makes good sense to go with something that requires no additional investigation, or perceived risk, if going with the flow is the objective.

Still, if creating a room that is more dynamic then the average room then reviewing additional possibilities is called for. For us, the desire to design a place for our son that would be appropriate at any age was paramount, as this remodel would be the last for a long long time. We pondered how we could get both a whimsical look, and one that would fit into a more mature set up once he entered the teens.

We decided upon wood puzzle flooring. It comes in a wide range of natural wood shades, and is made of solid hardwood. We flipped through several photos of different combinations and were able to confirm that this flooring will look great with furniture suitable for a small child and a teenager. Plus, our son had a super time helping us install it, as it is nothing more than a giant puzzle.

Since he was present for, and participated in, the installation he loves it more than he would one that just appeared. Looking forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

So you have undertaken the task of setting up a home office. At this point you have a desk and chair in place, along with any shelves you could squeeze in without things looking cramped. Thus, thankfully you have addressed, and overcome the issue of space to a large degree, but organisation is still an issue.

Mainly you are struggling with all the stuff that comes in the mail, your kid’s backpacks, and out of your handbag or briefcase. All those invitations, discount cards, reminder notes, maps, and more should never ever be shoved into a drawer, as they will do you no good if they are not within view. I mean how can they possibly remind you of a certain date, that you child has a half a day of school, that you are entitled to a free coffee, or how to get to a destination if they are out of sight and mind?

All you need to combat this struggle with loose paper clutter is to make or buy a memo board. No that is not earth shattering idea, but what is follows. If something does not fit on the board, then you do NOT keep it. Either rewrite the valuable info on a smaller pre-allocated list, or on a calendar. Keep cute push pins readily accessible to switch out the old for the new.

Obviously, the memo board needs to be the sort to take pins, not a chalkboard and it should be large enough to do the job. But, keep things within reason, if you get a gigantic board you are never going to throw anything away, and will simply have a massive wall of reminders. Yuck. Dedicate a few minutes at the end of every week to refresh the materials.

As the amount of time we spend inside our homes increases with the winter weather, we will have a tendency to observe things we normally overlook. For example dull wooden flooring, becomes apparent as we take extra minutes to clean up the wet mess that has been drug in on shoes. As we wipe away at a parquet floor that looks lacklustre the wheels in our heads begin to spin. Time to rejuvenate them, we think. But then comes the deluge of other priorities, and the long list of what will be required. After taking a deep breath, and recognizing this can be completed in due time make some decisions,

Take note, if the floors have been waxed and sealed, it might be time to repeat the process after sanding them down. You can either rent a sander to do the refurb yourself, or hire a pro to get the job done. But once this has occurred, what can you do to keep those floors looking great longer? Actually, some floor finisher/polish have sunscreen in them to protect the wood from sun damage. Otherwise, you are left with the old fashioned approach of opening curtains when the space is in use, and closing them when it is not. If I were you, I would definitely inquire about the sunscreen. It can lengthen the time span between having to redo the floors, and when they start to look bland again.

For those of you who read the articles on this site with even some regularity, it is apparent how compulsive I am about maintaining my wooden floors. It might come across as somewhat fanatical at times, but since I was a small child I have wanted pristine wood floors throughout a house. This was prompted by the floors in my aunt’s house, they were some of the most gorgeous floors I have ever seen, and she too went to some extreme lengths to keep them spectacular.

In fact, I remember quite clearly wearing hard heeled mary jane styled shoes to her house one Easter and breaking into a spontaneous tap routine. I imagine the sugar from all that Easter candy was partly to blame, but I was quickly corrected. That may have been the last time I ever pretended to know how to tap dance, and the moment when my respect for wood floors set in.

Still, when I first saw a tip in a popular American magazine to place tube socks over the legs of furniture to protect the floors, I even scoffed at the idea. The picture that coincided with the recommendation looked preposterous, as did the expression on my face I assume. Anyway, I read further and saw that they meant for you to do this only when rearranging furniture. Thus, on a second look this makes a great deal of sense, and thought it no longer to be completely crazed.

Thought you might like to have the idea shared, if not the picture, I’m leaving that up to your imaginations.

Having seen this done by my grandmother when I was little, I have taken to hanging holiday cookie cutters as decorations this year. In grannies house the already antique cutters looked beautiful dangling from the Christmas tree, and wreath over the mantle. Whether they were actually emanating the fragrance of sugar cookies remains a mystery, but her entire house smelled deliciously sweet all December long.

To bring back this ornament idea, my daughters and I will be stringing bell, star, snowman and star shaped cookie cutters with satin ribbons in copper, and silver. We will be making the copycat wreath from scratch, and then will match things up by wrapping coordinating ribbons around the wreath with identical mini cutters woven in. By the time this memory surfaced, I had already planned out the baked goods that I would be making for the holiday season, and sugar cookies were not on the list. However, I am reconsidering this, and imagine that I will simply not be able to resist baking at least a baker’s dozen or so just to make things complete.

Before you get a remodel underway on your kitchen, think long and hard about which flooring you will install. This can be an excellent spot to get your home greening into full swing. In fact it has been said that flooring in general is one of the strongest areas to jump on the greening bandwagon. Luckily a lot of the green flooring options work really well in kitchens, so put them at the top of your most wanted list.

For starters, think bamboo, cork, and brace yourself, linoleum. Bamboo is a rapidly renewable material (it is not really a wood as you might have formerly thought it is a grass). Not to mention it looks amazing. Cork is simply the bark of a tree, and grows back in a handful of years, unlike the extensive time it takes to regrow actual trees. It is critical that you get it sealed properly so that it does not absorb moisture and can be cleaned. Finally, linoleum is made of bunch of curious materials, but is environmentally sound. They all present excellent options, but each one will have pros and cons like any other flooring so find out which is the one for you with further research in this area.

Last month I noted that my fridge freezer did not appear to be getting as cold as it once did. This prompted me to do some research on freezer thermostats and fridge freezer repairs together with other related topics. Along the way, I got slightly side tracked by articles on how much food we waste per year, TONS, and how by freezing more foods we single handedly can keep quite an impressive amount of food from the bins.

Obviously, waste is a huge topic in these cash strapped times, and should be at all times. Next thing I knew the morning program I always watch was doing a piece on how consumers can do a lot more to lengthen the life span of their foods, and thus cut down on throwing out perfectly good food. Turns out we confuse use by dates with best when used by dates. And if we pay more attention, and get those foods that still have some life left in them to the freezer, we gain even more time to consume them.

I also took away from the information the insight that by purchasing more already frozen foods, specifically vegetables and fruit, I will have these healthy items available when I need them, but will not have to worry about using them quickly. This means I not only do my part to cut back on food waste, but I throw away less money too. All of this has spurred me to confirm that my freezer is functioning at its optimum level, so I can fill it up and know I am acting as a more sensible homemaker on several different levels.

I have a dear friend who is getting ready to install wood floors in her home. She has her own blog, and has begun a bit of an open forum regarding the whole process of choosing the right wood flooring. Everyone who has responded, including myself, has acknowledged the outright benefits of wood floors, such as the incomparable beauty, the fact that they add value to your home, that they are hypoallergenic, and can last for more than a lifetime.

With all of that said, there has been not only quite a few responses to her poll, but strong ones. I am finding that there are different camps involving those who support solid wood, milled exotics, engineered, and laminates. As I am a solid wood strip proponent, and have been for a while, I admittedly did not know about how much some of the others have to offer.

To be frank, when I spoke to this friend on a one on one basis I staunchly argued for real wood. I sited how rich it is in appearance, it holds heat, and has the longest lifespan of any flooring I would consider, amongst several other things. I then took a glance at some of the first few responses she had received online, and felt the need to put in my two cents. Really, to me it seemed like the obvious choice, knowing she plans to remain in the home for the rest of her life, and it is within her budget.

Then, as the votes continued to roll in, along with first-hand experience descriptions, I began to see that it might not be as cut and dry for any of the camps involved. I can now acknowledge that many factors should be considered prior to such a decision, aside from the obvious issue of cost.
