Update. Since I last reported on our family vegetable garden the seasonal glut of marrows we turned out this year has been weighing on me. They stare back at me through the kitchen window, and seem to triple in size overnight. So, the search for a recipe, or recipes to use these suckers up began.

So far I have attempted the chorizo, pepper and couscous stuffed marrow, and the rosemary roasted marrow. I must say that the later is by far the preference of my family and myself. For me, it was the simple effort required to prepare this dish that won me over.

Simply peel, seed and cut the marrow into wedges. Then season with olive oil, rosemary, garlic, pepper, by placing all in a bowl and mixing. Lay the wedges on a roasting tray in the oven for 20-25 minutes at 180C. Cook until golden and meltingly tender. Finally, just remove the wedges from the oven and toss with grated Parmesan. Admittedly, this is becoming somewhat of a fun adventure.

Why oh why do people no longer choose checkerboard flooring, I just do not know. I had the black and white pattern in the kitchen of my childhood home and just adored it. What a statement, what a pop of style, what a memory. When friends came over they also thought it was the coolest of things, not the big stained glass window, or the secret back staircase. Nope, it was all about the checkerboard floor.

Over the years, I have had the pleasure to see more colourful combinations and more elaborate patterns created. Not once have I ever been disappointed to come across this exciting choice. But, today it appears to have lost its popularity, and this I think is a flat out shame. I do hope there is a resurgence of the stylish option, and I pray that it is sooner rather than later.

This is the first year that my family has kept a vegetable garden. We went out and purchased all of the seeds for the veggies that we like and had a master plan. Unfortunately, our neighbours decided to gift us several tomato and courgette plants at the same time. Thus, we felt compelled to plant them in the space we had allotted for our carrots, cucumber, and lettuce. None of us like courgettes or tomatoes very much. So I have been attempting to find crafty ways to use them in which the kids will not turn their noses up at them.

So, I have come to rely upon various courgette recipes for breads, muffins and cakes. These have actually gone over quite well. Except, because of the excessive yield of the plants, we now have marrows. No telling what I can do with those guys. But, I am committed to finding the answer.

As for the tomatoes, I have resorted to making jar after jar of pasta sauces. These I have been giving away like crazy. In fact, the very neighbours who started this whole minor fiasco have been given 3 jars.

Thanks to the readily available recipes on the internet, a little creativity, and quite a bit of work, the tomatoes nor the courgettes have gone to waste. It makes me think back to early farmers and how the women of the house must have gone to great extremes to use every morsel that they grew. Picking and choosing would not have been a luxury they were afforded. Still, we al look forward to planting our own selections next year.

We have all heard, if not experienced remodelling horror stories, mostly of the financial kind. But, there are quite a few ways to keep things from going bonkers. With proper planning the costs can remain within your budget.

Here I will use the kitchen as an example. Start by keeping to your original layout as much as possible. This will save you a bundle in not having to relocate plumbing, gas lines and outlets. Then when the time comes, pick items that look expensive, but are not. For example, your counter surfaces can be made of look-a-like. Try patterned laminates, or solid surfaces that resemble natural stone in appearance, but not in price. Finally, do whatever tasks you can yourself. This does not mean bite off more than you can chew. Keep to things that will not possibly result in big issues if you mess it up, and you should be fine.

My family and I spent last Easter at my grandmothers home. I had not celebrated the holiday at her place for at least 10 years. So, it came as a great surprise when we entered her house and she had all the arts and crafts projects my brother and I had made for her over the years out on display. Of course, many of the pictures and objects had been long forgotten by us both, but we agreed they made nice Easter decorations.

The response from my kids was brilliant. They had never seen anything I had made as a child, and they were mesmerized. In fact, it made me feel inspired to take some art lessons with my children. But the point of this is that I believe that my grandmother is on to a great idea.

Once we have kids of our own we showcase their arts and crafts for a few years and then everything gets stored away. Well, after some time has passed, take them out, along with those you made as a child, and those your parents made as children etc. Everyone will be grateful to see the art display, and a forgotten artistic bliss may resurface.

It has been ages since I actually used a recipe that I found in a magazine. Often, I find that the creators of magazine recipes are trying to impress a specific market, and include ingredients that reflect the same, instead of just publishing a good recipe. For instance, star fruit crops up, as do a plethora of spices I have never required before. And, when I want to make something, I want it to be easy and economical. I do not want to have to buy a special baking tin, or a pricey bottle of what I consider an unusual choice of seasoning.

Anyway, I digress; I came across a sweet and simple chicken salad recipe that really hit the spot. All you need is 1 spoonful of Colemans powdered mustard, 1 spoonful of water and 2 spoonfuls of mayo for the dressing. Then, chop up pre-cooked chicken breast, cucumber, red pepper, mixed salad greens and some onions and presto. It is good stuff, and the price is in keeping with my liking.

An outdoor deck can add valuable dimensions on to your living space. There are a great many different types of wood that can be used to build your deck, but there is also the option of synthetic alternatives. This can be a very practical approach to decking, but you should note from the start that it will not replicate wood completely. As long as you are aware of this, then you should be very fond of your outdoor flooring.

The modern day alternatives include wood polymer and plastic polymer composites. They are both marvellous products and have several note worthy benefits. The most important of those is that they are effectively resistant to both bugs and rot. Thus, the lifetime of the decks structure and appearance should more than suit your needs.

A bookcase can be a fabulous place to display treasured collectors items, or cherished books. It can be placed into your home for functionality, dramatic flare, or even to divide rooms, it all depends upon your intent and the selection you make of the bookcase itself. But, no matter what the reason you have for the placement of a bookcase within your home design, you need to be aware of that motivation before you make a purchase.

Then once you have established your intentions, be conscious of keeping the shelves organized, and clutter free. When you start to haphazardly place objects upon your shelves you diminish the potential visual impact that lies beneath. Remember that what you place on the bookcase should be purposefully put there to continue the story of you and your home design.

If you are doing a makeover on a small childs room here is one great tip to implement. Make sure that lower shelves and drawers are low enough to the ground for your child to reach, and use them. It is imperative that early on in a childs development that they are taught how to organize and tidy up their space. If they cannot reach the very articles that make this act possible then they have already lost the lesson, due to no fault of their own. So, when putting in built in cabinets, or purchasing them already made, do everyone a favour and consider your childs size.

Once you identify for your kid that there is a specific place for everything, the learning process can begin. He or she will thank you for this later in life when their partners commend them on their cleanliness and organization. So, if you have the chance to put in such storage, just do it.

I recently read a report that stated that a large portion of women in the developed world today make more money than their husbands do. Apparently, the trend is for women to marry men who are less educated then they are, and as such are making bigger pay checks. This caught me off guard, for two reasons. One is that I thought in a great many circumstances women were still reliant on a portion of their partners income, not making the bigger salary. The second, is that I am unaware of any major shift in the amount of homemaker responsibilities that men complete. Hence, I ponder if this end result is that women bring home the big section of the bacon, are still frying it up in the kitchen, and then are cleaning the kitchen to boot. Seems to me that inequality has taken an unexpected turn.
